Comics Haul Week Of 5.25.22

Hey gang, normally I’d prepare a whole thing about the comics I was super hype for this week, but given the events of this Tuesday that seems like it would be in poor taste and also I, like every single American, am so tired and furious and heartsick and weary, and frankly me ol’ fun-tank is a-sputterin’ empty right now.

Here’s what I received and had already written up the frame of a listicle for; maybe some of them would be something nice to enjoy and find a few moments of peace in a world that demands you present your soul to be shredded when you open your eyes in the morning.

(Brief note: As of this writing The Well isn’t downloading on literally any device to which I have access, not iPad nor iPhone Comixology or Kindle apps, not computer nor Kindle nor web-based Kindle or Comixology client; the photo below looks like garbage because I couldn’t even open a sample of it to get a screenshot of the cover and had to blow up the product-page image. I’ve reached out to the publisher to see about getting a new version of the file sent out because I can’t be the only one having this problem, but it’s not working yet, so I can’t in good conscience actively recommend it, but if The Well piques your interest maybe invest in a physical copy or leave that bad boi on your wishlist for now.)

The Well, By Jake Wyatt And Choo

A fantasy graphic novel about Lizzy, a girl who gets cursed by a wishing well, and her adventure to grant three wishes in order to break free.
Li-Zhen’s life on the archipelago is simple. Known to friends and family as Lizzy, she takes care of her grandfather and their goats, she flirts with the woman who helps row the ferry, and she stays away from the fog that comes in the night—and the monsters hiding within it.
But Lizzy’s life comes apart when she steals a handful of coins from a sacred well to cover a debt. The well requires repayment, but it doesn’t deal in coins. It needs wishes, and its minions will drown Lizzy in its depths if she doesn’t grant them. Lizzy finds herself on a quest to uncover hidden memories, bestow great wealth, and face the magical secrets that nearly destroyed her family—and are now returning to threaten everything she has ever known.
In this breathtaking graphic novel, Jake Wyatt and Choo have created a modern fable based on magic and family secrets, exploring the power—and limits—of wishes.

Witch Watch, Vol. 2: A Friendly Scrum, Story and Art By Kenta Shinohara

Morihito receives a new prophecy, one that points to “dogs and raindrops” as the harbingers of disaster for Nico. Morihito makes sure to be extra alert on rainy days, but when he and Nico go shopping one rainy afternoon, they’re attacked by a stranger wearing a dog mask! And apparently it’s someone Nico already knows, and he’s her friend?! But that isn’t the only hurdle the pair faces, as Nico is soon caught in an unknown magic user’s trap and whisked away! Who are these mysterious figures who are after Nico, and what do they want with her?

So that’s what the comics-man brought me in his glowing van and fancy furry pants; what’d you all get? Sound off in the comments, and have a great week!
